Accessible plain language summary design for clinical trial results

Plain language summaries (PLS) help make clinical trial results easier to understand. Their design plays an important role in how readers find, follow, and use that information. I work with clinical research sponsors and research teams to design clear, accessible PLS documents, from individual summaries to reusable layout systems.

PLS design services

Custom PLS design

Whether your team needs a single summary or design support across multiple clinical trials, I develop clear, accessible, non-promotional layouts that follow health literacy and information design best practices, always with the patients in mind. Services include plain language summaries (PLS) and lay protocol synopses (LPS).

I also provide accessibility remediation for existing plain language summaries.

Accessibility from the start

A PLS should be accessible to readers who use screen readers and other assistive technologies. I integrate digital accessibility throughout the design process, from visual presentation and document structure to PDF tagging and validation.

My workflow incorporates WCAG and PDF/UA standards, with accessibility testing using PAC, JAWS, NVDA, and VoiceOver. Accessibility Conformance Reports (ACRs) based on the VPAT are available upon request.

Consistency across clinical trials

Sponsors managing multiple studies often need summaries that follow a consistent visual structure while accommodating different study designs and results.

I develop reusable layouts and templates that provide flexibility across studies, streamline production, and support a consistent reading experience.

Collaborative PLS development

I collaborate with clinical research sponsors and medical writers to develop clear, accessible plain language summaries. By bringing writing and design expertise together, we can refine content and visual presentation to make complex clinical trial information easier to understand.

When needed, I can also bring experienced PLS writers into a project.
